Case Management With Refugees

Case Management with Refugees is one of three courses in the Certificate in Refugee Services Foundation.

This course will prepare students with the basic case management skills as applied in refugee serving agencies such as refugee resettlement, health settings and mental health agencies.

Course Objectives and Benefits to Attendees:

Upon successful completion of this course students will:

  • Understand and articulate core case management skills needed for cross-cultural populations.
  • Identify and access key resources for refugee clients.
  • Communicate successfully across cultural and linguistic boundaries and establish working relationships to meet the needs of refugee clients.
  • Address cross-cultural ethical dilemmas using the ethical problem-solving framework.


Who Should Attend:

Individuals working in Human Service Programs where refugees would be seeking services would benefit from attending this course. This includes:

  • Resettlement staff
  • Social workers in any setting serving refugees
  • School personnel serving refugee children and families
  • Medical staff in both outpatient and inpatient settings
  • Parks and recreation staff and other programs serving children
  • Child welfare staff
  • Mental health workers
  • Food and income support program staff
  • Housing staff
  • Corrections, etc.

Thursday nights, 6 p.m.-8:45 p.m., August 29, 2013 through December 12, 2013


Presenter:

Rachael Lara, is a Licensed Social Worker currently working as a Psycho-social rehabilitation specialist and case manager with Leyline Advocates. She received her Bachelor's degree in social work from Boise State University in 2009.
Rachel has been working with the refugee population of Idaho since 1999 as an Ameri-Corp volunteer, a Family Literacy Educator for the Learning Lab of Boise for over eight years and continues to provide service coordination for refugees.
