Working With Refugees Across Cultures

Working with Refugees Across Cultures is one of three courses in the Certificate in Refugee Services Foundation.

It provides an introductory framework for effective and competent cross-cultural practice with refugees in the human services.

Course Objectives and Benefits to Attendees:

Upon successful completion of this course students will:

  • Utilize a strengths-based, culturally sensitive approach to practice with refugees.
  • Develop a system for cross-cultural practice that can accommodate frequent arrivals of new cultural, ethnic, religious and linguistic groups.
  • Communicate successfully across cultural and linguistic boundaries to increase access and quality of care to refugees.
  • Manage personal biases to minimize the potential impacts upon refugees.
  • Obtain skills to diminish the influence of bias and institutional racism in the policies and decision-making processes of organizations serving refugees.


Who Should Attend:

Individuals working in Human Service Programs where refugees would be seeking services would benefit from attending this course. This includes:

  • Resettlement staff
  • Social workers in any setting serving refugees
  • School personnel serving refugee children and families
  • Medical staff in both outpatient and inpatient settings
  • Parks and recreation staff and other programs serving children
  • Child welfare staff
  • Mental health workers
  • Food and income support program staff
  • Housing staff
  • Corrections, etc.

Presenter:

Kathy Tidwell, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker currently working at Boise State University School of Social Work as the Director of the Institute for Families & Communities. She also owns Tidwell Social Work Services & Consulting, a mental health clinic specializing in trauma work and practice with refugees.
Kathy received her Master's degree in social work from California State University, Sacramento in 1989. In addition to the years of direct practice, she has also worked for many years as a supervisor, a manager and a consultant.
