This journey introduces the traveler to the multifaceted culture of Germany and environs.

Our adventure begins in Berlin, the capital and largest city of Germany. The Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, and Brandenburg Gate serve as reminders that Berlin is still a study of contrasts in a reunified Germany.

Other highlights of this educational travel program include:

  • Potsdam, with its majestic Sanssouci palace and formal gardens, was once the residence of the Prussian kings.
  • Dresden, capital of Saxony, was known as the jewel box because of its baroque and rococo city center. Although heavily bombed in 1945, significant restoration has helped Dresden regain its status as a major cultural center.
  • Prague, capital of the Czech Republic, suffered considerably less bombing damage, preserving most of its historic architecture in pristine condition. Prague's castle is the largest in the world, and native son Smetana musically immortalized the river Moldau.
  • Rothenburg is a charming well-preserved medieval walled city with red-roofed houses located on a plateau overlooking the Tauber river. The town's criminal museum exhibits various punishment and torture devices used during the Middle Ages.
  • Nuremberg has a checkered past: unofficial capital of the holy Roman empire, center of the German renaissance, Nazi party rallies and documentation center, and site of the Nuremberg trials
  • Salzburg, an Alpine village in western Austria, is named a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its well-preserved city center. The birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Salzburg is best known to Americans as the setting for The Sound of Music.
  • Neuschwanstein Castle was commissioned by the extravagant Bavarian King Ludwig II and is the inspiration for the fabled Disneyland castle.
  • Munich, capital city of Bavaria, hosted the 1972 summer Olympics, and with its proximity to the Alps is a finalist for the 2018 winter Olympics. Home of Oktoberfest, BMW, pedestrian zones, lovely parks, festive traditions, and friendly locals, Munich is one of the world's most livable cities and is a fitting conclusion to our spring sojourn.
