Chinese Gallery

This painting on glass was done from the backside. It represents symbolically what every Chinese family hoped and prayed for: long life, wealth and children (preferably male heirs).

by Arthur A. Hart, Director Emeritus,
Idaho State Historical Society

The Chinese were a rich and colorful part of Idaho’s community for more than a century. Chinese New Year's parades and other ceremonial occasions were enjoyed by all. Despite the prejudices many experienced, they made many important economic and cultural contributions to the state and its people.

Superb works of art decorated the Chinese Masonic Hall and other Tong meeting places in the early 20th century. This painting on glass was done from the backside. It represents symbolically what every Chinese family hoped and prayed for: long life, wealth and children (preferably male heirs).
